The 1999 version of Hunter x Hunter is an underrated gem. I find the eyes in 2011 too big after watching 1999. Also 2011 butchered Killua earlier design, he looks
There are 3 OVA series that continue the 1999 anime up until the end of the next arc, you may be interested in that. Chapter 185 if you finish the OVAs, around chapter 100-105 if you stop at episode 62. If you're looking to watch the 2011 anime, I recommend starting from episode 1. There are some small differences in characterisation and stuff
Hunter x Hunter (2011) is widely accepted as one of the best shonen anime of all time by fans and critics equally. There are certain aspects of this anime that qualify it as top-tier shonen. It
If you want to watch it dubbed, watch Hunter x Hunter (1999) (since Hunter x Hunter (2011) doesn't have a dub yet). However, the 3 OVAs that follow it don't have a dub. Hunter x Hunter 1999 has an older art style, the Hunter Exam and Zoldyck Family arcs are slow-paced, but the York Shin City arc was handled really well.
There’s enough differences between it and the 2009 Version to make it worth watching. The same could technically be said about the 1999 Version compared to the 2011 Version, however if I could compare it to anything, it would be like comparing the original Universal Version of Dracula to the Spanish Version.
1999 has its flaws but it's the version that made me love hxh and to this day York shin city is my favorite arc because of how 1999 showed it. It was so dark & sinister. Compare the uvogin vs kurapica fight in 1999 vs 2011, the 1999 vibe was perfect for the scene Don't forget 1999s op for this arc too, my favorite op in any anime.
Madhouse's 2011 adaptation was met with near-universal critical acclaim. Adrian Marcano from Inverse considered Hunter x Hunter 2011 to be one of the greatest anime series ever. He said that the anime set itself apart with one of the greatest story arcs in anime history in which the villain, not the hero, takes the anime to instant classic status.
I’m gonna say OG FMA because Hunter x Hunter 1999 more or less adapted the same story and is fairly light hearted in plot and characters in comparison the twists, characters, and themes that the OG FMA had. Hunter x Hunter at the end of the day is still a shonen while this FMA actually felt like a seinen with its psychological tragic aspects.
